Why is social media so hard?
Why is social media so hard?
Well, it is, and it isn’t.
Social media. I have seen the results and looked at statistics long enough to be convinced that it works as a part of an integrated marketing plan. Right now, statistics do not need to sway me; I use them to tweak any advice I give.
But the difficult things-
- You need a plan: If you aren’t targeting your client (and some might say your ideal client) you are wasting your time. When I started (and most of my real estate friends, for that matter) we were told to grow our network of agents in the hopes of picking up referrals. I was also given a hyperlocal area link to hang out in on Facebook. The hyperlocal Facebook page turned out to have membership mostly of high school students and other agents, and I felt creepy hanging out there. And when I analyzed the number of national referrals coming to my area- well, that turned out to be a colossal waste of time.
- You need time and patience to implement the plan. Your blog should be your hub, and it will produce results. One of my friends has been quoted in the news because of the hyperlocal information in her blog. But you can bet that she had more than 3 posts, wrote on a somewhat consistent schedule, and had set up a system to be FOUND.
- Be out there so you can be found! That’s where Facebook and a Facebook page, twitter, and LinkedIn come in handy, as spokes in your plan that lead in to your hub. More ideas for interaction (and inbound marketing) can be found on hubspot’s site- but take one step at a time.
- Simplify. Start with having a blog- and contributing to it and building it. Make it the best blog that you can. Make it easy to contribute to by using Animoto and Posterous. Then add the rest one at a time. If you try to do too much at once, you will quit.
And then social media doesn’t work.
